“Bad taste” can mean chlorine, earthiness, metal, sulfur, or simply water that sat in plumbing for hours. Where and when it happens is more useful than taste alone.
Metallic taste often points people toward plumbing or minerals, but it cannot tell you what is actually in the water. Comparing fixtures and hot versus cold water gives better clues.
A damp spot on the ceiling can go from a small ring to a serious problem in a few hours. Before looking for a missing shingle or climbing onto the roof, deal with two immediate hazards: electricity and the weight of water-soaked ceiling material.
Water around a water heater does not automatically mean the tank has failed. Dry the area and find the highest point where moisture returns: fittings, the drain valve, the relief discharge pipe, or the tank base. If water is coming from the tank itself, corrosion is visible, or electricity or gas is involved, stop using the unit and call for service.
Shut off the water heater’s energy source, let the water cool, close the cold-water inlet, and connect a hose to the drain valve. Open a hot-water faucet to admit air and drain to a safe location. Before restoring power to an electric tank, confirm that the tank is completely full.
Around 120°F is a common residential starting point because it limits standby losses and reduces scald risk compared with hotter settings. It is not a universal rule: some Legionella-control strategies store water hotter and use a thermostatic mixing valve to deliver safer temperatures at fixtures.
Soft clicks, humming, and expansion noises can be normal. New, loud, or persistent sounds deserve more attention: rumbling often points to sediment, whistling can indicate a flow restriction or pressure issue, and hissing with visible moisture can suggest a leak.
Hard water is usually a maintenance problem rather than a health problem. It can leave scale, make soap less effective, and build deposits in fixtures and water-heating equipment. Measure the actual hardness first, maintain the places where scale forms, and consider whole-home softening only when the impact is substantial.
There is no single “ideal” water-hardness number for every home. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies 0–60 mg/L as CaCO₃ as soft, 61–120 as moderately hard, 121–180 as hard, and more than 180 as very hard. Treatment decisions should combine that number with real effects such as scale, soap performance, and appliance maintenance.
If water starts hot and then runs cold quickly, the heater is working at least partly. Compare household demand with the system's storage and recovery rate, check for simultaneous showers or appliances, confirm operating mode and temperature, and look for hot-water leaks. A failed lower element in an electric tank, sediment reducing useful capacity or an undersized heater can all shorten hot-water duration.
If shower pressure is weak but other faucets flow normally, the problem is usually local: mineral buildup in the showerhead, a kinked hose, a mixing cartridge that is not opening fully or a worn tub diverter. If every fixture is weak, test whole-house pressure and investigate the main supply, leaks or pressure regulator before replacing the showerhead.
