If a water report says your hardness is 90, 160, or 250 milligrams per liter (mg/L), the natural question is whether that number is “good.” The first useful point is that there is no universal household hardness target that every home needs to reach.
Hardness mainly describes dissolved calcium and magnesium. It helps predict scale, soap behavior, and maintenance needs. It is not a simple drinking-water cutoff where water suddenly becomes unsafe above one number.
Use the hardness scale as a map
The U.S. Geological Survey classifies hardness, expressed as milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), this way:

The table describes water; it does not prescribe treatment. A result of 130 mg/L does not mean a softener is automatically required, just as 50 mg/L does not guarantee that every other water-quality issue is absent.
Moderately hard water is often manageable, but it is not a medical target
For many households, the moderately hard range of 61–120 mg/L is a practical middle ground: minerals are present, but scale may remain easy to control. That can be convenient without making the range an official “ideal.”
If your water is 150 mg/L and creates very little maintenance, there is no automatic reason to force it down to 80. If it is 220 mg/L and fixtures, showerheads, and water-heating equipment scale constantly, the real-world burden becomes more important.
Make sure the units match
Water reports and softeners may use mg/L, parts per million, grains per gallon, or regional degree scales. A bare number is meaningless until you know the unit.
For this purpose, mg/L and parts per million are approximately equivalent in water. If your softener uses grains per gallon, convert the measurement rather than entering an mg/L value directly.
Total dissolved solids (TDS) are not the same as hardness
Low-cost conductivity meters often estimate TDS. That number includes many dissolved ions and does not directly tell you water hardness.
If you are programming a softener or trying to understand scale, use an actual hardness measurement rather than guessing from TDS.
Program a softener from measured incoming hardness
An ion-exchange softener needs the incoming hardness value to regenerate efficiently. Guessing too high can waste water and salt; guessing too low can allow hardness to break through before regeneration.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program recommends basing regeneration on actual hardness and water use when the equipment supports demand-initiated operation.
Do you need to aim for zero hardness?
Usually not as an end in itself. The practical goal of household treatment is to reduce the problems hardness causes, not to chase a zero reading simply because it is possible.
Conventional ion-exchange softeners also use salt and water during regeneration. If partial softening or treatment of selected hot-water equipment solves the maintenance problem, that may be more sensible than treating more than necessary.
Let the house provide the second half of the answer
Pair the number with what you see: how often aerators clog, how quickly scale returns to shower glass, whether a coffee maker needs frequent descaling, how detergents perform, and what the water-heater manufacturer recommends.
The useful hardness level is one whose effects you can manage without disproportionate maintenance. Use the USGS ranges to understand your measurement, then decide whether treatment is justified by what the water is actually doing in your home.
