A metallic taste can be associated with iron, copper, plumbing corrosion, or water that sat in contact with pipes. It cannot identify a metal or quantify a health risk.
Compare more than one faucet
Try cold water at the kitchen and another fixture. If only one tastes metallic, its aerator, connector, or local piping is more suspicious. If the whole house is affected, consider the service line, household plumbing, and utility supply.
Notice whether the taste is strongest after stagnation
A first-draw metallic taste that fades after briefly running cold water suggests interaction with plumbing. That pattern is useful information to give the water utility or a plumber.
Hot-only taste points in another direction
If cold water tastes normal but hot water tastes metallic, the water heater, fittings, or hot-water piping deserve attention before assuming the utility changed.
Metallic taste is not a lead test
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that lead in drinking water cannot be reliably detected by taste, odor, or appearance. Older plumbing, recent work, a utility notice, or a specific lead concern calls for testing rather than tasting.
Color and staining add clues, not certainty
Iron and copper issues may accompany discoloration or deposits, but visual clues still do not replace analysis. Blue-green, rusty, or particle-filled water is a reason to contact the utility or a qualified water professional rather than improvising treatment.
