Why Is My Shower Water Pressure Low?

If shower pressure is weak but other faucets flow normally, the problem is usually local: mineral buildup in the showerhead, a kinked hose, a mixing cartridge that is not opening fully or a worn tub diverter. If every fixture is weak, test whole-house pressure and investigate the main supply, leaks or pressure regulator before replacing the showerhead.

A shower that suddenly feels weak does not always mean the entire house lost water pressure. A showerhead turns a relatively modest flow into a pattern of small jets, so mineral scale blocking several openings can make the spray feel dramatically worse while supply pressure remains normal.

Before looking for a major plumbing fault, compare fixtures. If the bathroom sink and kitchen faucet are strong, start at the shower itself.

Find out whether the problem is shower-only

Run the sink in the same bathroom, then a fixture elsewhere. If all of them are weak, the shower may simply be revealing a whole-house pressure problem.

If the others are normal, focus on the showerhead, hose, mixing valve, diverter and nearby plumbing.

Mineral scale is one of the easiest causes to check

EPA WaterSense recommends periodically inspecting showerheads for scale. Deposits can narrow small openings and send the spray sideways or reduce flow.

Remove the showerhead only if its design and instructions allow it, and use a cleaning method compatible with the finish. Vinegar works for some mineral deposits and materials but is not suitable for every decorative coating, so follow manufacturer care guidance.

A handheld-shower hose can restrict flow quietly

Check for twisting, flattening behind a slide bar or a sharp bend near a fitting. Some hoses can also fail internally while looking normal outside.

A displaced washer or poorly seated connection can reduce the open passage as well.

Do not remove internal flow-control parts at random

Many showerheads include flow-control components designed for water efficiency and intended performance. Drilling or removing them can increase water use, change spray quality and conflict with local requirements.

If a WaterSense showerhead performs poorly at otherwise normal household pressure, look for scale or a defect before altering the product.

If only hot water is weak, look beyond the showerhead

Compare the shower on full cold and full hot. Strong cold flow with much weaker hot flow points toward the mixing cartridge, pressure-balancing valve, water heater or hot-water supply.

Cleaning the spray holes might improve appearance but will not fix a restriction on the hot side.

The mixing cartridge can limit water movement

Mineral deposits, wear or incorrect installation can prevent a cartridge from opening fully. A handle that has become stiff, unstable temperature or strong flow changes as the handle moves are useful clues.

Opening a concealed shower valve requires shutting off water and identifying the exact model. If access is uncertain, a plumber is a better choice than generic disassembly.

For a tub-shower combination, watch the diverter

If substantial water continues pouring from the tub spout while the shower is engaged, some available flow is being lost there. A worn or scaled diverter may not close fully.

A small residual trickle can be normal on some designs; a strong stream throughout the shower is not.

Flow and perceived spray force are not identical

A well-designed showerhead can provide a satisfying spray with lower water use through coverage and spray-force design. WaterSense performance requirements address spray force, coverage and pressure compensation.

That is why simply buying a higher-flow showerhead does not repair genuinely low supply pressure.

If every fixture is weak, return to whole-house troubleshooting

EPA says many household fixtures operate best at roughly 45–60 psi service pressure. When the entire house is weak, measure pressure at an appropriate hose bib and investigate the main shutoff, leaks, PRV and utility supply.

No showerhead can compensate for severely inadequate incoming pressure.

When to call a plumber

Get help if pressure suddenly falls throughout the home, the shower valve will not control temperature, there is evidence of a concealed leak, a diverter or valve requires wall access, or low flow remains after a properly cleaned showerhead.

The shower is a useful indicator, but it is not always the source. Compare first, clean second, and open valves only when the evidence actually points there.
