A dryer that becomes excessively hot often has restricted airflow from a lint filter, clogged vent, or blocked exterior outlet, although sensors and controls can also fail. Abnormal heat should not be ignored because lint is combustible; stop using the dryer if there is a burning smell, smoke, or an unusually hot cabinet.
Clean the lint screen and confirm airflow
Clean the lint screen before or after each load as the manual directs. With the dryer running only if there are no danger signs, check outdoors that the vent flap opens and airflow is reasonably strong.
Check visible venting for crushing or blockage
A crushed flexible duct behind the machine restricts air just like lint. Do not use unapproved vent materials or push tools blindly into long or inaccessible ducts.
Oversized loads also trap heat and moisture
If the drum is so full that clothes cannot tumble freely, drying takes longer and heat circulates poorly. Reduce the load and use the appropriate cycle before assuming an internal failure.
Persistent overheating needs internal service
Thermostats, sensors, or relays can fail and keep heat on when they should not. If airflow and load are normal but the dryer still overheats, disconnect it and arrange service rather than bypassing thermal controls.
