How to Clean a Microwave Inside and Out Without Damaging It

To clean a microwave, remove loose food and the turntable first, loosen dried splatters with steam if the manufacturer allows it, then wipe the interior with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Avoid steel wool, abrasive cleaners, oven cleaner and excess liquid, especially around vents and controls.

Dried food on a microwave wall seems to invite aggressive scrubbing. Usually the better answer is the opposite: rehydrate the mess first, then wipe it away with something soft. That removes residue without scratching the interior coating or pushing liquid into vents and electrical areas.

A full cleaning has four different zones: the turntable and removable parts, the cavity, the door and the exterior. Each can tolerate a different amount of moisture, and treating them all the same is where many cleaning mistakes begin.

Check the manual and let the appliance cool first

USDA recommends consulting the manufacturer’s use-and-care instructions. Some manufacturers tell you to unplug the microwave before cleaning to reduce electrical-shock risk; some models also have specific directions for filters, coatings or steam-cleaning features.

If the microwave was just used, let the turntable, walls and any containers cool to a comfortable temperature. Remove the glass tray, roller ring and other parts the manual identifies as removable.

Clean the easy pieces before the cavity

Wipe out loose crumbs and pieces of food. Wash the turntable and ring according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Many glass trays tolerate warm soapy water, but a very hot glass tray should not be plunged straight into cold water because rapid temperature change can stress the glass.

Dry removable parts before putting them back. With the tray out, you can reach the floor and roller area much more easily.

Steam helps because it replaces scraping

For hardened splatters, USDA suggests heating a microwave-safe container with one cup of water plus either baking soda or lemon juice until it boils, then leaving the closed microwave alone while the mixture cools. The steam softens dried food.

There is no need to fill the container to the brim or handle it immediately after boiling. Use a stable, microwave-safe vessel, follow normal precautions with hot liquids and give the moisture time to loosen the residue before opening the door.

Plain water can also provide the steam if you do not want to add anything. The important mechanism is warm moisture, not a special ingredient.

Then wipe—do not attack the coating

Use a soft cloth dampened with warm water. For grease, add a small amount of mild dish soap. USDA advises against steel wool, scouring pads, abrasive cleaners and oven cleaners inside a microwave.

Work over the ceiling, side walls, floor and corners. If one patch stays stubborn, dampen it again or repeat the steam step instead of scraping with a metal tool.

Do not pour water into the cavity. Wet the cloth, wring it out and keep liquid away from vents, slots and openings.

Look up: the ceiling is often the dirtiest surface

Food splatter travels upward and dries where it is easy to miss. Check the ceiling in good light. If you see an interior cover or panel—such as a waveguide cover—do not remove, scrub or soak it unless the manual specifically says it is removable.

A piece that looks like a simple sheet may protect important components. If that part is burned, torn or badly damaged, consult the manual or service information rather than improvising a repair.

Clean the door carefully around the edges

The inside of the door collects condensation and splatter. Wipe it with a soft cloth and the cleaner permitted by the manufacturer, using little enough liquid that it does not run into seams.

Remove food residue from the contact surfaces and edges so the door can close normally. Do not pry at seals, mesh or panels, and do not dismantle the door to clean between layers of glass.

If the door is bent, the latch is damaged or it no longer closes correctly, stop using the microwave and have it assessed. The door is part of the microwave’s safety system.

The outside needs even less liquid

A barely damp cloth is usually enough for the cabinet and handle. On touch controls, apply cleaner to the cloth rather than spraying the control panel directly.

Over-the-range microwaves often collect cooking grease on the exterior. Use a cleaner compatible with the finish—stainless steel, painted metal, glass or plastic—and dry it afterward to reduce streaks.

Do not flood or block ventilation openings.

Remove the source of odor before adding fragrance

Microwave odors often come from thin films of food that are hard to see. Clean the ceiling, walls, tray and door first. The same steam method USDA describes with water and lemon juice or baking soda can help with lingering food odors.

Once the appliance is clean and off, leaving the door open briefly can help it air out when that is safe in your household. Avoid fragranced sprays not intended for an appliance that heats food.

Burn marks are a reason to look more closely

A brown food mark may simply need more cleaning. Repeated sparking, peeling interior coating, exposed metal, electrical odor or a burned interior cover is different.

If arcing continues after you remove any accidental metal object and clean food residue, do not keep running test cycles. Check the manual and arrange service if the problem persists.

The easiest deep clean is the one you prevent

USDA recommends wiping up splatters and spills as they happen so they do not bake onto the surface. In practice, a damp cloth after the microwave has cooled saves far more work than an occasional aggressive scrub.

Covering food with a microwave-safe lid when appropriate also limits splatter, while still allowing steam to vent as the container instructions require.

The sequence that works

Remove accessories, clear loose debris, use steam to soften stuck food, wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap when needed, clean the door and exterior, and dry everything before reassembly.

A microwave does not get cleaner because you use a stronger chemical. It gets cleaner when dried food is softened first and removed without abrasion or liquid entering places it should not go.
