A concrete patio usually cleans best when you start with sweeping, a suitable cleaner, and scrubbing before reaching for more pressure. The stain type determines whether a specialized treatment is needed.
Remove loose debris and protect surroundings
Sweep leaves, soil, and gravel; move furniture and protect sensitive plants from cleaners or runoff.
Match cleaner to the stain
Grease, algae, rust, and general grime do not respond the same way. Test a small inconspicuous area first and follow the product label.
Scrub before increasing pressure
A stiff nonmetal brush often lifts grime without eroding the surface. Rinse while avoiding contaminated runoff into storm drains where prohibited.
If pressure washing, start gently
A concentrated nozzle can etch concrete. Keep distance, start at lower pressure, and increase only as needed. For old oil stains, work in short cycles of absorption, cleaner, scrubbing, and rinsing rather than flooding the area. Concrete is porous, so a deep stain may need several moderate treatments instead of one aggressive pass.
