Can You Use Paper Towels in the Microwave?

Plain white paper towels that the manufacturer considers microwave-safe can generally be used to cover food or absorb small splatters. Not every paper product is equivalent: brown paper bags, newspapers, printed paper, metallic elements, or unidentified recycled materials should not be assumed safe for microwave use.

Choose plain white, unprinted microwave-safe paper towels

FSIS includes white microwave-safe paper towels among materials that can be used. Check the product packaging when in doubt and avoid sheets with metallic designs, unknown inks, or coatings.

Use it as a light cover, not a sealed wrapping

A sheet over a plate can limit splatter without trapping all steam pressure. Do not pack large amounts of paper around very greasy food or use excessive heating times.

Do not substitute brown paper bags or newspaper

FSIS advises against brown paper bags and newspapers because they may be unsanitary or present a fire risk. Being made of paper does not mean every product has the same formulation or heating behavior.

Stop the microwave if the paper scorches

If you see smoke, darkening edges, or a burning smell, stop the appliance and keep the door closed if there is a small internal flame until it goes out, following the manual. Investigate excessive time, grease, or unsuitable material before trying again.
