Define what is actually failing first. A blank screen points toward power; a live screen that cannot change HVAC operation may involve settings, communication, or the equipment itself.
If the display is blank
Replace batteries if the model uses them and check the HVAC service switch and breaker. Some thermostats receive low-voltage power from the equipment and go blank when a service door or switch is open.
If it responds but heating or cooling does not start
Check mode, setpoint, schedule, and normal compressor protection delays. A smart thermostat may also show connectivity or equipment alerts.
Compare the reading thoughtfully
A small difference from another thermometer can be normal because of location. Direct sun, drafts, or an exterior wall can bias the sensor.
Do not open or jumper wiring casually
Although many thermostat circuits are low voltage, the connected HVAC equipment includes line-voltage components. Do not bridge terminals to force operation without proper service procedures.
Separate thermostat behavior from equipment behavior
If the thermostat appears to send a call but the equipment displays a fault or does nothing, the problem may be downstream. Give a technician photos of the display, error codes, and what changes when you adjust the setpoint.
A factory reset is not a first troubleshooting step; it can erase setup and programming without repairing the cause.
