Recurring mold almost always means recurring moisture. Surface cleaning removes visible growth but does not change a cold wall, active leak, or material that never dried internally.
If it returns after rain, look for water entry
Roofing, siding, windows, foundations, or plumbing may repeatedly wet the area. Record timing so you can connect recurrence with weather or fixture use.
If it returns in winter, consider condensation
Exterior corners, areas behind furniture, and window surrounds can be colder than the room. High indoor humidity and poor air movement increase surface condensation.
If it returns after a flood or major leak
Drywall, insulation, wood, carpet, or padding may never have dried completely. Painting or closing an assembly too soon can trap moisture.
A dehumidifier does not fix every water source
It can manage airborne moisture but cannot stop liquid water from a roof, pipe, or ground source.
Extent and material set cleanup limits
A small spot on a hard surface is different from widespread growth in porous materials. EPA guidance recommends considering professional remediation when the area is extensive or major water damage is involved.
For mold to stop returning, identify the moisture mechanism, correct it, and verify drying before repairing finishes.
