Compare the room when heating is off

If the room cools much faster overnight, look for drafts, poor windows, exterior exposure, or limited insulation. If it only falls behind while the heating system is running, focus first on heat distribution.

Check vents, radiators, and obstructions

Make sure furniture, curtains, or rugs are not blocking outlets and that valves are correctly positioned. Do not close many vents elsewhere to force air into one room because that can disrupt system airflow.

Measure temperature in several locations

A thermometer beside a window or exterior wall may read lower than one near the center. Compare at the same height and away from sun, drafts, and heat sources before deciding the imbalance is severe.

Persistent imbalance may need balancing or repair

Disconnected ducts, air-bound radiators, misadjusted dampers, or poor insulation are not fixed by changing the thermostat. If the difference is large and consistent, system and envelope assessment can identify the loss.
