A blank thermostat screen can result from dead batteries, loss of heating and cooling system power, an open breaker or service switch, a condensate safety switch, or a failed thermostat. Start with external checks and do not work on energized thermostat or equipment wiring.
Check whether the thermostat uses batteries
Some models run entirely on batteries while others use them as backup. Replace them with the specified type and correct polarity; if the screen returns and soon goes blank again, the issue may be more than the batteries.
Confirm that the heating and cooling system has power
From a safe location, check whether the relevant breaker has tripped or an accessible service switch was turned off. If a breaker trips again after one reset, leave it off and arrange service.
Look for condensate or water clues
Many systems use a safety switch that stops operation when a condensate drain clogs or a pan fills. Water around the equipment calls for fixing the drain or leak, not bypassing the safety switch.
If power is present but the screen stays blank, the control needs diagnosis
A control transformer, fuse, wire, or thermostat may have failed. Do not open equipment or perform voltage testing unless qualified; a blank screen with apparent system power needs service diagnosis.
