An air conditioner that hums but does not start is receiving some power or a call to run, but a component is failing to get moving. The cause can be power supply, a capacitor, motor, compressor, or relay. Because the equipment uses line voltage and capacitors that can retain charge, homeowner checks should stay at external controls and the thermostat.
Check thermostat, breakers, and filter without opening equipment
Confirm that the thermostat is calling for cooling, the filter is not severely blocked, and accessible disconnects are in their normal positions. If a breaker trips again after one reset, leave it off and arrange service.
Identify whether the hum comes from the indoor or outdoor unit
An indoor blower that does not move points to a different branch than an outdoor unit humming without fan or compressor operation. Listening from a safe distance helps describe the fault to a technician without removing panels.
Do not push the fan or handle capacitors
Tricks that involve spinning a fan with an object or trying to override electrical control components expose you to moving parts and stored energy. A swollen capacitor or stalled motor requires diagnosis with the equipment isolated by a competent technician.
Burning odor or a strong hum means shut it down
If the hum grows louder, there is a hot-insulation smell, smoke, or repeated failed starts, shut cooling down from a safe control. Repeated attempts can overheat a motor or compressor that is already stalled.
