Brown tap water usually contains sediment, rust, or particles disturbed from piping and can appear after utility work, pressure changes, or corrosion. Before flushing large amounts of water, compare fixtures and cold versus hot water to learn whether the source is local, the water heater, or the supply.
Check whether it affects one faucet or the whole home
If only one fixture is affected, clean the aerator and investigate that branch. If several cold faucets change at the same time, the source may be the service line or utility distribution.
Compare cold and hot water
Brown water only on the hot side points toward the water heater, tank sediment, or hot-water piping. Do not drain or open a heater without following the unit-specific procedure and its temperature and pressure precautions.
Utility work can temporarily disturb sediment
Flow changes, hydrant use, and repairs can disturb deposits. Check utility notices and follow their flushing guidance; avoid washing light-colored laundry in discolored water because it can stain.
Persistent discoloration or a health advisory changes the response
If discoloration persists, heavy particles appear, taste changes, or the utility issues an advisory, do not decide safety from appearance alone. Follow official instructions and testing recommendations where appropriate.
