An outlet that is distinctly hot is not normal and can indicate a loose connection, overload, worn contact, or a device drawing excessive current. Stop using it until the cause is known, especially if there is odor, discoloration, or buzzing.
Unplug the load if it is safe to do so
If the receptacle is merely slightly warm from a small charger, check the adapter too, but a hot outlet deserves caution. If it is too hot to touch, smoking, or arcing, do not approach it further.
See whether one appliance triggers the heat
Space heaters, hair dryers, and other high-load devices stress weak connections. Do not use extension cords or adapters as a workaround, and do not move a suspect appliance to another outlet without considering the appliance too.
Discoloration, looseness, or odor points to damage
A loose-fitting plug, brown marks, deformed plastic, or burning odor are reasons to leave the receptacle out of service. Do not remove the cover to tighten conductors unless you are qualified to do electrical work.
Turn the circuit off for serious overheating signs
If you can identify the breaker from a safe position, turn that circuit off and arrange electrical service. With smoke or fire, evacuate and call emergency services; do not apply water to an energized electrical fire.
