A conventional light switch should not be distinctly hot. Some electronic dimmers can feel warm within their specifications, but strong heat, odor, discoloration, or crackling can indicate overload or a bad connection.
Separate normal dimmer warmth from abnormal heat
A dimmer dissipates some heat while controlling a load, and manufacturers specify load limits and conditions. A hot standard switch or a dimmer too hot to comfortably touch needs attention.
Check whether the lighting load changed
Higher-wattage bulbs, additional fixtures, or an incompatible lamp combination can increase heat. Do not exceed the device rating or mix lamp types the control is not designed to handle.
Odor, buzzing, or a distorted plate are stop signs
Stop using the switch and turn off the circuit at the panel only if you can do so safely. Do not remove the wall plate or handle energized connections to investigate.
A loose connection can heat even while the light still works
Normal-looking operation does not rule out a hazard. An electrician can check connections, load, and device compatibility; if there is smoke or fire, leave the home and call emergency services.
