A humid home can have more than one moisture source at the same time. The useful first step is separating moisture generated indoors from moisture entering through weather, leaks, soil, or the building shell. Otherwise a dehumidifier may treat the symptom while the source continues.
Measure before guessing
A basic hygrometer gives you relative humidity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent and ideally around 30–50 percent when practical. The exact number matters less than the pattern and whether condensation, musty odors, or mold are developing.
Normal daily activities add water vapor
Showers, cooking, boiling water, drying clothes indoors, and unvented appliances add moisture. A bathroom fan that does not exhaust outdoors or a recirculating range hood may leave much of that moisture inside.
Outdoor weather matters
During hot, humid weather, opening windows can add moisture instead of removing it. A properly operating air conditioner removes water as it cools, while an oversized system may cool quickly without running long enough to dehumidify well.
Look for water where it should not be
Check under sinks, around appliances, at ceilings, exterior walls, basements, and crawlspaces. Ground moisture can be significant in lower parts of a house. A stain that grows or an odor concentrated in one area deserves more attention than one high humidity reading.
When to suspect a building problem
If humidity stays high during dry weather, keeps returning to one wall or ceiling, or materials are visibly wet, investigate leaks, insulation problems, humid-air infiltration, and exterior drainage.
Physical clues help confirm the readings
Fogged windows, musty closets, bubbling paint, or laundry that dries very slowly can all point toward excess moisture, but they do not necessarily share the same cause. A hygrometer helps separate a brief episode from a persistent condition.
Check the places you rarely see
Behind furniture, under sinks, around cold pipes, and in exterior-wall corners, local humidity can be higher than in the middle of the room. If the problem is confined to one of these areas, measuring there is more useful than relying only on a central reading.
High humidity is a clue, not a diagnosis. Measure it, note when it rises, and connect the pattern to weather, daily moisture, leaks, and ventilation.
