A gas oven that will not ignite deserves more caution than many household appliance problems because fuel is part of the system. If you clearly smell gas or hear gas leaking, stop trying to light the oven. Leave the home and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not operate lights, switches, or electronics before you leave.
If there is no gas odor and the cooktop burners operate normally, troubleshooting can proceed in a much more orderly way: electrical power, controls, gas supply, and the oven’s ignition system.
A gas oven still needs electricity
Most modern gas ovens use electricity for the control panel, safety valves, and electronic igniter. A dead outlet or tripped breaker can therefore stop oven ignition even while the house still has gas service.
Check appliance power as the owner’s manual allows. If a breaker trips again after one reset, stop and have the electrical fault investigated.
Rule out control settings first
Control Lock, Delayed Start, a clock that needs to be reset after an outage, or Demo Mode can prevent heating on some models.
Record any error code before clearing it. Pairing the code with the model number is much more useful than guessing which part failed.
If the cooktop works but the oven does not, that is useful information
Normal cooktop burners tell you gas is at least reaching the appliance. They do not prove that the oven valve or ignition system is healthy, but they narrow the problem.
If the cooktop is also dead and there is no known utility outage, do not start loosening hidden gas fittings. Check only an accessible shutoff valve when the manual identifies it and you know its normal position.
The igniter is a common failure point
Many modern gas ovens do not use a pilot flame that you light with a match. An electric igniter heats and the safety system opens the gas valve only when the proper conditions are reached.
An igniter may visibly glow and still be too weak to complete that sequence. A glow by itself does not prove the component is healthy.
Do not “help” electronic ignition with an open flame
If the oven is designed for electronic ignition, do not use matches or a lighter to force the burner to light. Do not bypass flame-sensing or gas-valve safety components.
Those parts are there to control exactly when gas is allowed into the burner.
Cleaning can matter, but stay within the user procedure
Food and grease buildup may affect some accessible ignition areas. Whirlpool recommends following the care guide for model-specific igniter cleaning where that procedure is provided.
Do not remove gas valves, burner piping, or service panels simply to “clean” the system. Once gas connections or hidden electrical parts are involved, service is the right boundary.
Observe the sequence from a safe position
When you request Bake, note what happens: does the display respond, is there clicking, does an igniter activate, does an error appear, or does the attempt stop after a few seconds?
That sequence gives a technician useful information without requiring repeated ignition attempts.
A burner that lights and then shuts down also needs diagnosis
Brief ignition followed by shutdown can involve sensing, controls, supply, or combustion. Never defeat a safety device to keep the flame running.
Unusual flame color, soot, abnormal combustion odor, or erratic operation are reasons to stop using the oven and have it inspected.
If you smell gas, the troubleshooting session is over
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises leaving the home immediately if gas is smelled or heard leaking and contacting local gas authorities from outside. Do not use electrical switches or electronics before leaving.
Do not search for a gas leak with a flame and do not keep cycling the oven to see whether the smell disappears.
When to call a qualified technician
If the oven has electrical power and gas service, settings are correct, and normal ignition still does not occur, diagnosis of the igniter, gas valve, control, and supply pressure belongs to qualified service.
The cooktop and oven can fail independently
On a range, the surface burners and oven may share the incoming gas supply but use different ignition and safety components. That is why normal cooktop flames do not rule out an oven-specific fault.
Likewise, a failed oven does not mean you should adjust the household regulator or gas pressure yourself. Supply-pressure diagnosis requires the correct instruments and service procedure.
With a gas oven, knowing when to stop testing is part of a safe repair. Basic checks can uncover a setting or power issue; the gas-supply components and their safety controls are not the place to improvise.
