A 30% higher bill does not necessarily mean the house used 30% more electricity. The final amount combines energy use, the price per unit, billing-period length, fixed charges and sometimes corrections from earlier meter estimates.
Before walking around unplugging chargers, open two or three bills and compare the numbers that actually drive the total.
Start with kWh, not dollars
Find the kilowatt-hours used this period and compare them with the previous bill and, ideally, the same season last year.
If dollars rose while kWh stayed similar, investigate rates, taxes, time-of-use pricing, fixed charges or billing days. If kWh rose substantially, then the house really did use more electricity.
Check the number of days in the billing period
A 35-day bill compared with a 28-day bill can look alarming even when daily use barely changed. Divide kWh by billing days for a quick normalized comparison.
Where estimated readings are used, a later actual meter read may correct previous months. Look for “actual,” “estimated” or adjustment notes on the bill.
Weather is often the largest explanation
Heating and cooling are among the biggest energy uses in a home. DOE notes that HVAC represents a major share of household energy spending.
A heat wave or cold snap can increase run time even if you never touched the thermostat. Compare outdoor conditions and equipment hours before assuming a component is failing.
An HVAC system that runs much longer deserves attention
Dirty filters, blocked outdoor units, open windows, air leaks or thermostat settings can increase runtime.
If the system cannot reach setpoint, runs almost continuously or energy use rose sharply along with comfort problems, maintenance or professional diagnosis is warranted.
Electric resistance heat can create very large increases
Portable space heaters, electric resistance furnaces and auxiliary heat on some heat pumps draw substantial power while operating. One high-wattage heater running for many hours can matter more than dozens of standby devices.
Heat-pump owners should notice whether Auxiliary or Emergency Heat is running far more than usual.
Water heating is another major load
DOE places water heating among the largest household energy expenses. More showers, a hot-water leak, a higher setpoint or sediment-related inefficiency can all increase use.
A hot-side faucet drip wastes both water and the energy needed to reheat replacement water.
List new loads and behavior changes
Did you start charging an EV, install a dehumidifier, pool pump, second freezer, home server or electric floor heat? Are more people working from home?
Make a list of changes since the last normal bill. Large equipment and long operating hours explain big jumps more often than tiny plug loads.
A refrigerator or freezer can run excessively when something is wrong
Poor door seals, inadequate ventilation, dirty coils on models that require cleaning or unnecessarily cold settings can lengthen compressor runtime.
If the compressor seems to run constantly and temperatures are also wrong, troubleshoot the appliance rather than treating it only as an efficiency problem.
The clothes dryer can produce noticeable spikes
More loads, very long cycles or a restricted vent increase dryer runtime. A washer that leaves clothes unusually wet also shifts extra work to the dryer.
Lint and venting should be checked for safety as well as energy use.
Use interval data if your utility provides it
Smart-meter portals often show energy by hour or day. Look for the timing of the increase: overnight baseload, HVAC events, EV charging or laundry days.
That pattern is far more useful than switching off random appliances without a hypothesis.
An energy assessment can find losses you cannot see
DOE and ENERGY STAR recommend home energy assessments to identify air leakage, insulation problems and inefficient systems. Professional assessments can include bill review, envelope inspection, mechanical-system evaluation and diagnostic testing.
For a home that has always used a lot of energy, there may be no single guilty appliance—just several compounding losses.
What if the increase looks impossible?
If kWh doubled with no plausible weather or usage change, verify the meter reading where safe and contact the utility to ask about readings, meter status or billing adjustments.
Electrical odors, hot wiring, arcing or unusual breaker-panel behavior are not energy-efficiency puzzles. Call an electrician.
The sequence that finds the cause fastest
Dollars → kWh → billing days → rate → weather → major loads → equipment runtime → energy assessment. That order keeps you from hunting tiny standby loads while the HVAC system has been running twice as long.
A high electric bill is a data problem before it is an appliance problem. Find out what increased before deciding why.
