A bulb that fails unusually quickly may be the wrong type or wattage, run too hot, experience vibration, make poor contact, or be affected by an electrical problem. Repeated failures in one fixture point toward that fixture; failures across several areas with brightness changes can indicate a broader electrical issue.
Confirm bulb type, base, and allowed wattage
Use a bulb compatible with the fixture and do not exceed its maximum rated wattage. In enclosed fixtures, a light-emitting diode (LED) bulb should be rated for enclosed use when the manufacturer requires it.
Heat and vibration shorten bulb life
Closed globes, insulation around fixtures not designed for it, and vibrating fans can raise temperature or stress filaments and electronics. Correct the installation and use the intended lamp type.
A loose or scorched socket should be taken out of service
If the bulb flickers when touched, the socket is discolored, or there is a burning smell, switch the circuit off from a safe location and stop using the fixture. Do not insert tools into an energized socket.
Failures across several fixtures can point to voltage or connection problems
Bulbs failing in different rooms along with changing brightness, buzzing, or heat are not a single-lamp problem. An electrician should check supply and connections without the homeowner probing exposed live parts.
