Why Do Clothes Feel Rough After Washing?

Clothes can feel rough after washing because of excess detergent, poor rinsing, hard water, overloading, or overdrying. Before adding fabric softener, check dosing and rinsing because coating existing residue with another product can make the problem worse over time.

Reduce detergent if fabric feels coated or stiff

Too much detergent can leave surfactants and minerals behind, especially in large loads or low-water cycles. Use the amount recommended for load size, soil level, and water hardness.

Leave enough room for rinsing

An overfilled drum keeps garments from moving and releasing residue. Reduce the load and use an extra rinse only when the washer and fabric allow it and residue is genuinely suspected.

Hard water can leave mineral deposits

Calcium and magnesium can make fabrics and towels feel stiffer. Adjusting detergent for hard water or appropriately treating the water can help; do not add acids to the washer without checking manufacturer compatibility.

Overdrying can also make fibers feel harsh

High heat and overly long cycles can make some fibers feel harsh and set wrinkles. Try a lower dryness setting or remove garments when dry instead of continuing to heat them by default.
