Why Are There Cockroaches in a Clean House?

Cockroaches in a home do not automatically mean the home is dirty. They can arrive in boxes, move from neighboring units, or survive on small water sources and tight hiding spaces; sanitation helps, but it is not the only factor.

Cockroaches in a home do not automatically mean the home is dirty. They can arrive in boxes, move from neighboring units, or survive on small water sources and tight hiding spaces; sanitation helps, but it is not the only factor.

Water and shelter can matter more than visible crumbs

Leaks under sinks, condensation, appliance drip areas, and warm crevices provide resources even in a clean kitchen. Dry damp areas and repair leaks to reduce what keeps cockroaches established.

In multi-unit buildings they may come from elsewhere

Pipes, utility chases, and cracks connect apartments. Sealing openings around services and coordinating control with building management can be more effective than repeatedly treating one unit.

Use monitoring to learn where they travel

Sticky monitors along walls, under sinks, and near appliances help locate activity. Track where cockroaches are caught instead of spraying the entire home without understanding the source.

Integrated control beats repeated aerosol use

Reduce accessible food and water, seal harborages, remove unnecessary cardboard, and use label-directed baits or targeted treatments when appropriate. A persistent or widespread infestation may require coordinated professional pest management.
