Gutters overflow because of debris, poor pitch, undersized drainage, or rainfall that exceeds capacity. The exact place where water spills over helps separate those causes.
If overflow is localized, look for a blockage
Leaves and sediment commonly collect near the downspout outlet. Localized overflow is more consistent with a clog than with the entire system being undersized.
Standing water after rain points to pitch
The gutter should move water toward its outlets. Sagging sections or loose hangers can create standing water and future overflow.
Overflow along the whole run suggests capacity
Very intense rain, a large roof area, or too few downspouts can overwhelm a system even when it is clean.
Water behind the gutter needs attention
If water runs between the gutter and fascia, attachment, roof-edge, or flashing details may be wrong. Correcting it early reduces damage to wood and siding. During a moderate rain, observing the system from the ground can be informative: note whether overflow begins at one outlet, a sagging section, or the entire run. Do not climb a ladder while gutters are wet.
