Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

If your air conditioner is leaking near the indoor unit, shut it down if water threatens ceilings, walls, flooring or electrical components. Common causes include a clogged condensate drain, a full or damaged drain pan, a failed condensate pump or ice on the evaporator coil that later melts. Do not bypass safety switches or keep running the system if water returns.

An air conditioner makes water even when it is working normally. As humid indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses, drops into a pan and leaves through a drain. The problem starts when that water shows up somewhere it was never meant to be.

The useful question is therefore not only “why is it dripping?” but “is the system making abnormal moisture, or has the normal drainage path stopped working?”

Protect the house from water first

If the leak is wetting drywall, ceilings, wood flooring, furniture or anything electrical, shut the system down safely and limit damage before continuing.

A bucket or towel can contain a small drip temporarily, but it is not a repair. An AC can generate a significant amount of condensate during humid weather, so an unresolved leak can damage building materials quickly.

A blocked condensate drain is one of the most common causes

Trane notes that condensate lines can clog with dust, debris and organic growth. When water cannot leave, the pan can overflow or a safety switch may shut the equipment down.

Useful clues include standing water in an accessible pan, no drainage at the normal outdoor outlet, a musty smell or a system that intermittently stops.

Not every drainage system is built the same way

Some systems drain by gravity; others use a condensate pump. A wall-mounted mini-split may send water directly outside, while an attic air handler may have a secondary pan and float switch.

Check the owner’s or installer documentation before opening connections. If there is a clearly designated homeowner cleanout, follow that procedure. Do not push rigid objects into hidden drain lines or pour random chemicals into the system.

The drain pan itself can fail

Metal pans can corrode and plastic pans can crack or warp. In that case, the drain line may be open while water still appears under the unit.

A failed primary pan often requires technical access to replace. Water in an emergency secondary pan should be treated as a warning that the primary drainage system is not doing its job.

A frozen coil can become a puddle when it thaws

If you see ice on accessible refrigerant lines or coil areas, the leak may actually be meltwater. The original cause can be poor airflow, a severely dirty filter, coil blockage or a refrigerant-system problem.

Do not chip ice off with tools or keep forcing cooling. Turn cooling off, let the system thaw safely and check the filter. If freezing returns, arrange professional diagnosis.

Check the filter because it may be part of the chain

A heavily loaded filter reduces airflow across the evaporator. That can promote freezing and later create excess water as the ice melts.

Replace an accessible filter with the correct size and type and make sure return and supply grilles are not blocked. Routine homeowner troubleshooting should not involve opening coil compartments.

A failed condensate pump stops water from leaving

Where gravity drainage is not possible, a small pump lifts condensate to a drain. If the pump loses power, becomes blocked or its float fails, the reservoir can overflow or trigger a safety shutdown.

Limit checks to accessible power and manufacturer-approved maintenance. Never bypass the float to keep the AC running with a full reservoir.

What if water is only dripping outside?

Water dripping from the intended outdoor condensate outlet while the AC runs can be completely normal. What matters is whether the water is following the designed path.

Water from the indoor cabinet, ceiling, wall or an unintended joint is not normal and deserves investigation.

Moisture around the equipment can create a second problem

If a leak wets materials for days, the HVAC issue can turn into a moisture and mold issue. Dry the affected area and correct the water source promptly.

Do not paint over a water stain while the drain is still failing underneath it.

When to call an HVAC professional

Arrange service if the line repeatedly backs up, the pan is cracked, ice keeps returning, a condensate pump will not run, water is near electrical components or you cannot identify a safe homeowner-accessible drainage path.

An air conditioner is supposed to create condensation; it is not supposed to leave that condensation in the house. Fixing the water path matters more than repeatedly drying the same puddle.
