Which Appliances Should Not Be Plugged Into a Power Strip?

A power strip is not a universal extension for every appliance. High-wattage equipment, or equipment whose manufacturer requires direct wall connection, can overload the strip or heat its contacts. Portable space heaters are a clear example: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to plug them directly into a wall outlet, never a power strip or extension cord.

Portable space heaters belong directly in a wall outlet

These appliances draw substantial power for long periods and an intermediate connection can overheat. Also keep the heater at least about 3 feet from combustible materials and turn it off when sleeping or leaving it unattended.

Follow the manual for microwaves, portable AC units, and other large equipment

Many cooking, cooling, or motor-driven appliances require a dedicated or direct connection depending on the model. Do not decide simply because the plug fits: compare wattage, current rating, and manufacturer instructions.

A power strip does not increase circuit capacity

Six receptacles do not turn one branch circuit into six circuits. Add the loads and do not daisy-chain strips. If you need more permanent outlets for frequently used equipment, proper installation is safer than multiplying adapters.

Heat, odor, or discoloration means stop using it

Disconnect a hot, deformed, crackling, or burned-smelling strip from a safe point. Do not simply move the same appliance to another identical strip without checking whether the load is excessive or the wall outlet is also damaged.
