Tiny flies emerging from potting mix often thrive when the upper soil stays persistently damp. Reducing moisture as the plant allows and interrupting the soil life cycle is usually more effective than chasing adults alone.
Confirm they are coming from the potting mix
Watch for tiny adults around pots and when watering. Yellow sticky cards help monitor adults, but they do not eliminate larvae in the potting mix by themselves.
Let the top layer dry if the plant tolerates it
Avoid keeping the upper layer continuously wet. Match watering frequency to the plant species instead of putting every plant on the same schedule.
Check drainage and standing water
Empty cachepots and saucers after watering and make sure drainage holes work. Compacted mix or a container without drainage keeps conditions favorable.
Repot only when there is another reason
Replacing all the potting mix can stress the plant and does not fix watering habits. Save repotting for degraded mix, root problems, or a persistent infestation that does not improve with moisture management.
