Look for large workers, nighttime trails, and small piles of wood-like debris pushed from a crack. Do not diagnose an indoor colony from one isolated ant that may have wandered in from outside.
Correct moisture before repairing wood
Check for leaks, condensation, and wood exposed to prolonged moisture. Replacing trim or framing without eliminating the moisture source can recreate the same favorable environment for the colony.
Follow trails to narrow the nest location without random demolition
Watch where workers return after feeding and listen for activity only from accessible surfaces. A colony may be in a wall, roof area, or nearby tree; opening finishes blindly increases damage.
Structural damage or an inaccessible nest calls for professional help
If wood has lost significant section, activity is extensive inside walls, or the nest cannot be safely located, arrange pest inspection and structural assessment when needed. Prioritize moisture correction and exclusion over indiscriminate treatment.
