The cycle ends, you open the washer, and water is still sitting in the drum. It is tempting to jump straight to “the drain pump is broken,” but several simpler problems can create the same symptom: an interrupted cycle, an unbalanced load, a kinked hose or debris in a user-serviceable filter.
The clearest way to troubleshoot is to follow the water’s path from the tub to the house drain. Start with controls and load, move to the hose and filter if they are accessible, and leave pump disassembly and electrical faults for last.
Before opening anything, try drain and spin
Make sure the cycle is not paused, the lid or door is fully closed and you did not choose an option that intentionally holds water or minimizes spin.
Cancel the current program according to the manual and select Drain/Spin or the equivalent setting. Listen. If the washer begins pumping normally, the original issue may have been a cycle interruption or load problem.
If it makes no attempt to drain, shows an error code or produces a persistent hum while no water moves, that information helps narrow the next steps.
An unbalanced load can look like a drainage problem
Some washers reduce or stop spinning when a load is badly out of balance. One heavy blanket, a single absorbent item or an overpacked drum can leave clothes soaking wet and may leave residual water.
Redistribute the load and remove some items if the drum is too full. Then try a drain-and-spin cycle again.
If there is clearly standing water well above the bottom of the tub and it does not move, continue through the drain path.
Check the hose before pulling the washer too far out
The drain hose can kink or become crushed behind the machine, especially after installation or when the washer has been moved for cleaning.
Look for a sharp bend or pinched section. Also check the installation. Whirlpool notes that incorrect hose height or configuration can contribute to drainage problems. The correct height and insertion depth vary by model, so use the installation manual rather than copying a generic measurement.
Do not shove the hose unusually deep into a standpipe or alter the plumbing arrangement without following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Make sure the house drain is not the actual problem
If the washer is pumping but the standpipe overflows or water backs up, the appliance may be doing its job while the household drain cannot accept the flow.
Watch the standpipe or laundry sink if your setup allows it. Slow drainage, gurgling or backups in nearby fixtures point toward a plumbing issue rather than a washer pump failure.
Do not pour chemical drain opener into the washing machine. A clogged building drain should be treated as a separate plumbing problem.
The pump filter may be full of pocket debris
Coins, hairpins, lint and small objects can reach the pump-filter area on washers designed with a user-accessible filter.
But not every washing machine has one you should open. Whirlpool notes that filter locations vary and that many current models do not have a filter intended for owner access. Do not remove random panels looking for one.
Check the manual. If it identifies a serviceable pump filter, switch the washer off and unplug it before following the model-specific procedure.
Prepare for water before opening the filter
If several gallons are still in the tub, that water needs somewhere to go when the filter opens. Some front-loaders provide a small emergency drain tube; others require slowly loosening the filter and catching water in stages.
Have towels and a shallow container ready. Do not suddenly unscrew a pump-filter cap while the drum is full. If the washer door remains locked, do not force it; many machines keep the lock engaged precisely because water is present.
After draining according to the manual, remove debris, check that the sealing surface is clean and reinstall the filter correctly so you do not create a leak.
Excess suds can interfere with the end of a cycle
Too much detergent or the wrong product can create excessive foam, extend the cycle and interfere with draining and spinning performance.
If you see heavy sudsing, let it subside and review the detergent dose for your product and water conditions. Use HE detergent in high-efficiency washers when the manufacturer requires it.
The sound of the pump tells you something
If you can hear the pump running but little or no water exits, a restriction in the filter, hose or house drain is a reasonable possibility. If the washer is calling for drain but the pump is silent, the fault may involve the pump, wiring, a sensor, the lid/door system or control.
A strong continuous hum without water movement can also mean a jammed or failed pump. At that point, disassembling the appliance moves beyond basic household troubleshooting.
When to stop and call for service
Arrange service if the drain hose and house drain are clear, you have cleaned a user-accessible filter when your model has one, and the washer still will not pump water out.
Also stop if you smell an electrical odor, see water leaking from the base, have a persistent fault code, need to remove the pump assembly or would have to work around energized wiring.
Do not bypass the door lock or safety sensors to force the washer to operate.
Test the fix with a small or empty load
After straightening a hose, cleaning a filter or redistributing clothing, run a short test or drain cycle with the washer empty or lightly loaded as the manual allows.
Watch for two things: normal discharge and leaks around any filter, hose or connection you touched.
A washer that will not drain is easier to diagnose by following the water than by guessing parts: cycle and load, outlet path, hose, house drain, filter, and only then pump or controls.
