Do not flip a modern mattress unless the manufacturer says it is double-sided or flippable. Many designs place the support core and comfort layers in an order that works only one way up.
Separate rotation from flipping
Rotating means turning the mattress 180 degrees while keeping the same sleep surface up. Flipping means putting the underside on top. They are different maintenance steps.
Check the exact model
Read the tag, manual, warranty information, or manufacturer guidance. A mattress specifically sold as flippable is built with usable comfort layers on both sides.
Rotation can help even out wear
Many manufacturers suggest periodic rotation, particularly early in the mattress life. The schedule depends on foam, innerspring, hybrid construction, and warranty terms.
Do not flip a one-sided pillow-top
If cushioning exists only on top, placing that side against the foundation does not improve support and can make the mattress uncomfortable or damage the design.
Flipping does not repair major sagging
Check the bed foundation, center support, and warranty requirements. Early deep sagging may indicate a support or material problem.
The simple rule is: rotate when recommended; flip only when the mattress is designed for two-sided use.
