The goal is not to make the air conditioner “work harder.” It is to reduce the heat load the system has to remove.
Use the highest comfortable thermostat setting
Comfort varies by household. Ceiling or portable fans can improve comfort in occupied rooms; turn them off when people leave because fans cool people, not empty rooms.
Stop solar heat before it enters
Blinds, curtains, and exterior shade on strong-sun windows reduce cooling load. Cooking and clothes drying at cooler times can also reduce indoor heat.
Keep filters and outdoor equipment clear
A loaded filter restricts airflow. The outdoor unit needs open space for air movement and should not be buried in leaves or storage.
Do not close many registers to force air elsewhere
In central systems that can change static pressure and required airflow. A persistently hot room deserves checks for duct delivery, insulation, windows, balancing, and solar load.
Humidity changes comfort
In humid climates, oversized equipment or very short cycles may cool without removing enough moisture. If the home feels cool but clammy, lowering the thermostat further may not address the cause.
If the system runs almost continuously and no longer reaches temperatures it previously maintained, check the filter and outdoor conditions, then arrange service instead of chasing the problem with an ever-lower setpoint.
