Remove laces, insoles, and dry mud

Remove detachable parts and brush off heavy dry soil before putting shoes in the washer. Washing caked mud wastes detergent and can leave residue in both the shoes and the machine.

Protect both shoes and drum

Place sneakers in a laundry bag or pillowcase and add old towels to cushion impacts. Avoid an unbalanced load that makes the washer shake, and use a gentle cycle with cool or warm water as allowed by the label.

Use modest detergent and skip fabric softener

Too much detergent is hard to rinse from foam, mesh, and padding. Fabric softener can leave coatings on performance materials, so use only products permitted by the shoe manufacturer.

Air-dry while supporting the shape

Lightly stuff shoes with clean paper or towels to hold shape and replace the stuffing as it becomes damp. Avoid the dryer or direct heat unless specifically approved because heat can distort soles and adhesives.
