The care label comes first because down jackets differ in shell fabric, water-repellent treatments, stitching, and fill. If machine washing is allowed, prepare the garment before the cycle.
Empty pockets and secure closures
Brush off dry soil and spot-treat stains with a compatible product. Close zippers and hook-and-loop tabs that can snag the shell.
Use a small amount of compatible detergent
A down-specific wash or the product recommended by the jacket maker helps limit residue. Fabric softener can interfere with finishes and is generally unnecessary.
Prioritize thorough rinsing
Down can retain detergent. An extra rinse may help when the garment label and washer permit it and suds remain.
Drying is the critical stage
If tumble drying is permitted, use low heat and pause periodically to gently break apart down clumps. Clean dryer balls may help where the manufacturer allows them. Expect drying to take time.
Do not store until the fill is dry throughout
A cool, heavy, or compact area can still hold moisture even when the shell feels dry. Continue drying patiently to prevent musty odor and mold.
A technical shell, leather trim, or professional-clean-only label changes the method; do not apply a generic down-jacket routine to every garment.
