To wash a cap without losing its shape, identify the bill construction and avoid heat, twisting, and aggressive agitation. Hand washing usually gives more control than a washing machine.
Check material, label, and colorfastness
Older caps may have cardboard bills, and some fabrics bleed dye. Test a hidden spot with moisture and follow the label if it restricts washing.
Pretreat the sweatband
Apply a small amount of mild detergent with a cloth or soft brush. Avoid unnecessarily soaking glued areas and seams.
Wash with gentle movement
Use cool or lukewarm water and clean without twisting the crown or bending the bill. Rinse out soap without wringing the cap like a towel.
Reshape and air-dry
Set the cap over a clean rounded form or lightly stuff the crown to hold its shape. Avoid the dryer and direct heat, which can shrink fabric and distort the bill.
