A jammed garbage disposal may hum without turning or drain slowly. Before touching it, disconnect actual power to the unit and use only access points and tools intended by the manufacturer.
Disconnect power, not just the wall switch
Unplug the unit when accessible or switch off its identified circuit. Make sure it cannot start unexpectedly while you work.
Remove visible objects with a tool, not your hand
Use long tongs or pliers to remove loose objects you can see from above. Never insert fingers or tools that can damage internal parts.
Free the rotor from the intended access point
Many models provide a bottom wrench socket. Work it back and forth to free the jam, following the manual.
Reset only after the unit is clear
After the jam is cleared and tools are removed, reset protection and test briefly with water. If it jams again or only hums, arrange service.
