Sorting laundry is about more than whites and colors. Dye transfer, fabric weight, soil level, and care labels determine which items belong in the same load.
Separate new items that may bleed dye
Bright reds, dark denim, and new garments can release dye in early washes. When in doubt, wash them with similar colors and use the care-label temperature.
Group by weight and texture
Heavy towels and denim can abrade delicate fabrics, and they dry at different rates. Washing similar fabric types together reduces wear and makes cycle selection easier.
Separate heavily soiled items
Clothing with mud, grease, or heavy soil may need pretreatment and a different cycle. Remove loose dry dirt before putting it in the washer.
The care label overrides general sorting rules
An item that calls for cold water, a mesh bag, or a delicate cycle should not go into a harsh load just because the color matches.
