How to Reset a Refrigerator

To reset a refrigerator, check the owner’s manual first because there is no universal procedure. If the manufacturer allows a power cycle, disconnect power for the specified time, reconnect it, and verify the actual temperature afterward. If the error returns or cooling does not recover, stop resetting and diagnose the cause.

Resetting a refrigerator can help after a power outage, surge, or one-time control-panel lockup, but it is not a repair. If the cabinet has been warming for hours, water is on the floor, you smell electrical burning, or the compressor repeatedly tries and fails to start, the priority is food safety and diagnosis—not repeated resets.

A useful rule is: perform one controlled reset when the symptom looks electronic or followed a power interruption; if the fault returns, keep any error code and troubleshoot the cause.

Check actual temperature before you reset anything

A refrigerator can have working lights while failing to keep food safely cold. If cooling is in doubt, place an appliance thermometer in the fresh-food section and minimize door openings.

USDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F / 4.4°C or below. If perishable food has been above that temperature for more than about two hours, restarting the appliance cannot restore the safety margin that was lost.

What does “reset a refrigerator” actually mean?

There is no universal refrigerator reset button. Depending on the model, resetting may mean turning cooling off and back on from the controls, unplugging the appliance for a specified period, cycling the breaker, or using a model-specific button sequence.

The owner’s manual therefore outranks any generic button combination online. A sequence written for another model can enter diagnostics, Demo mode, or change settings instead of resetting the appliance.

A power cycle should be deliberate, not repetitive

If the manual allows a power cycle and the plug is safely accessible, turn the unit off from its controls when appropriate, unplug it, wait the manufacturer-specified time, then reconnect it. GE, for example, uses about a one-minute power disconnect in some troubleshooting procedures.

Do not pull on the cord, handle a wet plug, or drag a heavy refrigerator across the floor just to reach the outlet if doing so could tip the unit or damage the water line.

Cooling does not return instantly

The display can wake up in seconds while the food compartment takes much longer to recover. Close the doors and listen for normal operation, then watch the actual temperature trend. A refrigerator that has just regained power may need hours to stabilize.

Avoid changing the set point every few minutes. Make small adjustments if needed and give the system time to respond; manufacturers commonly advise allowing roughly 24 hours to judge a temperature-setting change fully.

If the lights work but cooling does not, look beyond the reset

Confirm the refrigerator did not end up in Cooling Off, Showroom, or Demo mode after cleaning or control-panel use. Check that the temperature setting is still reasonable.

Then look for physical causes: a door held open by a container, blocked interior vents, inadequate exterior clearance, or dust on a user-accessible condenser if the manual calls for cleaning it.

Photograph error codes before removing power

A reset can erase the best clue you have. Take a photo of any error code or message first. If the same code returns, stop cycling power and use the manual or manufacturer support to interpret it.

After an outage, food safety comes first

Keep the doors closed during a power failure. When power returns, confirm that the refrigerator actually resumed cooling; some appliances may require the controls to be turned back on after a surge or outage.

Use a thermometer to make food decisions. A panel showing 37°F may simply be displaying the set point rather than the warmest temperature the food reached during the outage.

Do not reset around standing water or electrical symptoms

If water is on the floor, first determine whether it is coming from the refrigerator and shut off the appliance water supply if that can be done safely. Do not handle wet plugs or outlets.

Stop using the appliance for burning odor, sparking, a hot plug, or a breaker that repeatedly trips. Those symptoms need electrical or appliance service, not another reset.

What not to do to “force” a restart

Do not strike the compressor, jumper thermostats, hold random button combinations, or cycle power every few seconds. Compressors may need time for pressures to equalize, and many controls intentionally delay restart.

If power has just been restored and the compressor does not start instantly, wait the period specified by the manual. Repeated on-off cycling can complicate diagnosis and stress electrical components unnecessarily.

A reset does not change the food’s temperature history

Even if the refrigerator begins cooling again, the food has followed its own thermal history. If the compartment warmed, record how long it was out of range and make perishable-food decisions from that information.

A successful reset has two separate outcomes: the appliance recovers and the food remains safe. One does not automatically prove the other.

When one reset may be enough

If the problem began immediately after a power interruption, the controls were unresponsive, the manufacturer permits a reset, and the refrigerator returns to normal operation and maintains temperature without additional errors, the event may have been a one-time control fault.

Verify that conclusion with actual temperature over the next several hours.

When to stop resetting

Arrange service if the refrigerator still does not cool, restarts itself, repeats the same error, clicks without starting, develops recurrent heavy frost, or trips the breaker again.

A reset can restore electronics; it cannot repair a leaking seal, failed fan, refrigerant problem, or electrical fault. The reset is finished only when you verify that the refrigerator is truly cooling again.
