Mineral scale can reduce flow and send shower spray in odd directions as deposits build around the nozzles. The safest removal method depends on the finish and whether the showerhead can be removed without stressing the connection.
Start with the spray nozzles
Gently rub flexible spray nozzles with your fingers or a soft brush to loosen surface deposits. Before using any acid, see whether this simple mechanical cleaning restores a normal spray pattern.
Use mild acid only if the finish allows it
Diluted white vinegar can dissolve scale on many parts, but acids can damage some decorative finishes and coatings. Check the manufacturer’s care guidance and do not leave the part soaking for hours without checking it.
Protect the connection if you remove it
Support the fitting without levering against the shower arm. If it is seized, do not keep increasing force indefinitely; damaging a connection inside the wall can turn routine cleaning into a concealed leak.
Rinse, reinstall, and check the flow
Rinse away all cleaner, reinstall washers and seals in their original positions, and turn the water on gradually. If flow is still weak throughout the shower, the restriction may be upstream of the showerhead.
