A linen closet works best when each shelf has a clear category and items used together are stored together. Before buying bins, reduce unnecessary duplicates, measure the space, and reserve the easiest shelves for items used every week.
Empty the closet and group by use
Separate sheet sets, towels, blankets, bathroom backups, and other supplies. Within each group, set aside worn-out items or quantities far beyond what the household actually uses.
Keep complete sets together
Folding sheets and pillowcases inside one pillowcase or a labeled bin keeps sets from getting separated. Choose a system you can maintain after every laundry day rather than one that requires perfect folding.
Assign shelf height by frequency and weight
Keep frequently used towels and sheets between waist and eye level, bulky blankets higher, and heavier items lower. Avoid stacks so tall that one item requires dismantling the whole pile.
Leave room for airflow and restocking
A completely packed closet makes it harder to notice moisture, odors, or leaks and leaves no room for freshly laundered items. Keep some breathing space and periodically remove expired supplies or textiles no longer used.
