How to Organize a Closet

A closet works better when frequently used items are easy to reach and rarely used items do not occupy prime space. Organizing starts with deciding what deserves to stay and where it is used, not with buying bins.

Empty by category, not all at once

Work through hanging clothes, folded items, shoes, and accessories separately. This makes it easier to finish each group without turning the room into a long-term mess.

Edit before assigning storage

Remove items you do not wear, that do not fit, or that need repair. The less unnecessary inventory you keep, the fewer storage systems you have to maintain.

Give prime space to daily-use items

Keep weekly-use items at comfortable eye and hand level. Off-season clothing, luggage, and occasional items can go higher or farther back.

Keep categories visible

Opaque unlabeled bins can hide clutter. Use dividers, consistent hangers, or labeled containers only when they make it easier to return items to their place.
