Identify the vent and whether the nest is active

Observe from the ground for birds carrying nesting material or food and listen for young. Do not reach or push rods inside; a deep nest may sit near a fan, damper, or delicate duct.

Do not seal an active nest

If eggs or young are present, check local wildlife rules and use a wildlife professional when needed. Blocking the outlet can kill animals, drive them into the home, or leave material obstructing the duct.

Remove material only when legal and inactive

Once the nest is abandoned and removal is permitted, clean the duct from safe access and verify that the exterior damper moves freely. Use appropriate gloves and respiratory protection around droppings and dust.

Install a compatible guard without restricting airflow

Bathroom and kitchen exhausts can use bird-resistant covers designed to open with airflow. On dryer vents, avoid fine mesh that traps lint and raises fire risk; use a dryer-approved termination and keep it clear.
