How to Deep Clean a House Room by Room

A deep clean is easier to manage when you work room by room and from high surfaces down, leaving floors until last. The goal is not to clean everything at once but to finish each zone without re-soiling areas you already completed.

Clear clutter before cleaning

Pick up clothing, papers, misplaced items, and trash before bringing out cleaners. Cleaning around clutter doubles the work and leaves missed areas; a temporary basket can hold items that belong elsewhere.

Work from high surfaces downward

Ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelves, and trim drop dust onto lower surfaces. Clean those first, then furniture and working surfaces, and finish with baseboards and floors.

Change methods by room

Grease dominates kitchens, soap and moisture dominate bathrooms, and dust and textiles dominate bedrooms. Use cleaners that match each surface rather than applying one product to stone, wood, glass, and stainless steel.

Finish with floors and a brief reset

Vacuum or sweep before mopping so dust does not become slurry. When each room is finished, ventilate, put products away, and check handles, switches, and other high-touch areas that are easy to miss.
