How to Clean a Coffee Maker

To clean a coffee maker, discard grounds or capsules, wash removable parts that are designed for cleaning with mild detergent, clean the reservoir and coffee outlet, and dry before reassembly. Descaling is a separate job: follow the program and product specified by the manufacturer, because some coffee makers allow vinegar while others require a dedicated descaling solution.

A coffee maker can look clean outside while holding three very different kinds of residue inside: coffee oils, moisture in the water reservoir and minerals left behind by water. Treating all three the same way causes two common mistakes: descaling when the machine really needs washing, or running vinegar through a model whose manufacturer does not recommend it.

The safest routine separates the jobs: frequent cleaning of parts that touch coffee and water, plus periodic descaling using the procedure written for your model.

Start by turning the machine off and letting it cool

Before removing parts or wiping the housing, power the machine down, unplug it when appropriate and wait for hot surfaces to cool.

Discard grounds, used filters and capsules and empty the drip tray. Do not leave damp coffee waste sitting inside for days; oils become sticky and closed containers hold moisture.

Wash removable parts regularly

The carafe, filter basket, portafilter, drip tray and removable reservoir should be cleaned at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer. Warm water and mild dish detergent are appropriate for many removable parts.

Do not assume they are dishwasher-safe. Heat and strong dishwasher detergent can warp plastics, fade markings or damage finishes on components that were intended for hand washing.

The water reservoir deserves more attention than it usually gets

Standing water and a reservoir that never dries can develop film and odor. Empty stale water, rinse the tank and clean it according to your model’s instructions.

NSF has identified coffee-maker reservoirs among kitchen locations where microbial growth has been found. That does not mean a coffee maker is inherently unsafe; it does mean the reservoir is a food-contact area that benefits from regular care.

Clean the coffee outlet and splash areas

Wipe the coffee outlet, brew head and splash zones with a damp cloth while the machine is cool. On espresso machines, remove coffee residue from the group and portafilter using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Milk systems need even more frequent attention. Steam wands, tubes, jugs and milk circuits should be cleaned after use according to the design because dried milk adheres quickly.

Cleaning and descaling are different jobs

Detergent removes oils and organic soil. Descaling targets minerals deposited by hard water. USGS explains that water hardness comes mainly from calcium and magnesium and that these minerals can form scale inside household equipment.

A machine can be spotless of coffee residue and still need descaling if flow slows, brewing behavior changes or a descale alert appears.

Do not default to vinegar

Some drip coffee makers allow diluted vinegar; Mr. Coffee, for example, includes vinegar in cleaning instructions for certain models. Other pod and espresso machines specify a proprietary or dedicated descaling liquid.

Nespresso, for example, directs users to its descaling solution in machine-specific procedures. The accurate advice is therefore not โ€œall coffee makers can be cleaned with vinegar,โ€ but follow the approved method for your machine.

How to descale without improvising

Check the manual for the product, water volume and descale mode your model requires. Empty coffee or capsules, use a container large enough for the cycle and let the machine complete the full program.

Then perform every fresh-water rinse the instructions require. Rinsing is part of descaling, not an optional extra.

Do not combine vinegar, citric acid and commercial descaler. Choose one manufacturer-approved method.

If coffee tastes odd after cleaning

First make sure the system has been rinsed completely and the reservoir contains fresh water. Wash the carafe, lid and permanent filter because old coffee oils can produce stale or rancid flavors.

If the taste began after using a cleaner, run the additional plain-water rinses allowed by the manufacturer before brewing again.

Slow flow does not always mean the machine is failing

Mineral scale can restrict water passages. If the machine has a descale alert, act on it. If flow remains abnormal afterward, check filters, the reservoir and removable parts before assuming an internal component has failed.

Routine cleaning should not involve opening housings that expose electrical parts, boilers or pressurized components.

A simple routine prevents aggressive cleaning later

After use, discard coffee waste and rinse parts that need it. Regularly wash the carafe, filter assembly, tray and reservoir according to the manual. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and descale when the manufacturer or maintenance indicator says it is due.

A well-maintained coffee maker does not need one universal home remedy. It needs each type of residue treated with the right method at the right time.
