An oven with ordinary grease buildup can often be cleaned without caustic cleaners by using time, soapy water, and a mild paste compatible with the finish. Start with a cool oven, remove loose debris, and check the manual because catalytic liners, self-cleaning surfaces, and exposed elements may need different care.
Remove loose debris with the oven cool
Remove racks if the manual allows and collect debris with a damp cloth or nonabrasive tool. Do not scrape sensors, door gaskets, or heating elements.
Soften buildup with soapy water or a mild paste
On compatible surfaces, a baking-soda-and-water paste can help keep dried grease moist. Do not mix it with other cleaners and avoid areas where the manufacturer prohibits abrasives or moisture.
Let time do some of the work before scrubbing
Allowing a mild cleaner time to work reduces the force required. Wipe with damp cloths and repeat stubborn areas rather than using steel wool that can scratch enamel or glass.
Remove residue and dry before heating
Baking soda or soap left in the oven can smoke or mark surfaces when heated. Wipe until residue is gone, dry, and ventilate; for extreme carbonized buildup, use the method specified by the manufacturer.
