How to Clean an Air Fryer

Unplug the air fryer and let it cool. Wash the basket and pan with dish soap and a soft sponge, avoiding metal scrubbers. Never immerse the main unit. If grease has reached the heating element, clean it only with the method approved for your model.

An air fryer looks easy to clean because the basket lifts out and most of the mess seems to stay there. But grease and crumbs also reach the pan, the interior walls and, over time, the area around the heating element. When that buildup starts reheating on every cycle, the appliance may smell stale or smoke more than it used to.

Good maintenance has two levels: clean the basket and pan after greasy or messy cooking, and inspect the interior and heater periodically for buildup. Always unplug the appliance and let it cool completely before cleaning.

Clean grease before it turns into a hard film

After cooking, let the fryer cool, but do not leave a greasy basket for several days. Shake out crumbs and wash removable parts according to the manufacturer instructions.

Many baskets and pans are dishwasher-safe, but not every component or finish is. When you are unsure, hot water, dish soap and a soft sponge are the conservative choice.

Nonstick coating changes how you scrub

Burned-on residue makes aggressive scrubbing tempting. On a coated basket, that can trade a grease spot for permanent damage.

Soak the basket or pan in warm soapy water and give the residue time to soften. Then use a nonabrasive sponge or soft brush. Time usually does more useful work than pressure.

Avoid steel wool, knives and metal scraping tools. If the nonstick coating is peeling, flaking or deeply scratched, ask the manufacturer about replacement before continuing to use the part.

Never immerse the main air-fryer body

The housing contains the heater, fan, wiring and controls. Wipe the exterior with a lightly damp cloth and dry it. Do not rinse the unit under a faucet or let water run into ventilation slots.

For grease inside the cavity where the pan slides in, use a soft, well-wrung cloth. You are removing a film, not washing the electrical housing like cookware.

The heating element can collect residue too

If the fryer starts smoking with foods that did not smoke before, or you smell old grease even when the basket is clean, inspect the upper interior once the appliance is cold and unplugged.

Philips, for example, instructs owners of some models to place the appliance carefully upside down on a soft surface to reach the heater, then use a soft sponge with hot water and a soft- to medium-bristle brush for stuck residue. Hard wire brushes are specifically discouraged.

Not every air fryer is designed for the same position or access. Check your manual before turning the appliance over or touching the heater area.

Why an air fryer can smoke when the food is not burned

Rendered fat pooling in the pan can become very hot, especially with bacon, chicken skin, burgers or oily marinades. Lightweight crumbs can also circulate toward the heater.

If you see unusual smoke, pause the appliance if it is safe to do so, let it cool and inspect the pan. Do not simply keep cooking at a lower temperature if there is a significant amount of old grease inside.

Electrical-smelling smoke, melting-plastic odor without an obvious food cause, sparks or cord damage are reasons to stop using the appliance and arrange service or replacement.

Parchment and accessories affect cleanup too

Paper liners can reduce mess, but they should not block airflow or sit loose in an empty preheating fryer when the manufacturer does not allow it. The fan can lift lightweight paper toward the heating element.

Silicone inserts and extra racks collect grease around perforations and edges. Wash those separately and dry them fully before reassembly.

How to remove lingering food odor

If a clean-looking basket still smells, inspect corners, seams and the underside of removable plates where a thin grease film can hide. Hot water and dish detergent followed by a thorough rinse and dry are usually more useful than adding fragrance.

Do not leave cleaners inside and “burn them off” by running the fryer empty unless the manufacturer specifically instructs such a procedure.

Do you have to clean it after every use?

You do not need to deep-clean the heater every time, but the basket and pan should not keep accumulated grease and food residue from one meal to the next. Interior cleaning frequency depends on what you cook and whether you can see splatter.

Frequent fatty foods require more maintenance than reheating bread or cooking lightly oiled vegetables.

The routine that prevents smoke and stale odor

Let the fryer cool, remove residue before it hardens, wash removable parts with tools safe for their coating, dry thoroughly and inspect the upper interior from time to time. If grease reaches the heater, clean it only in the way your manufacturer permits.

Air fryers stay easier to clean when small messes are removed often instead of attacked aggressively after weeks of reheating. Less old grease inside means less smoke, less odor and less work later.
