A window air conditioner collects dust on its filter, coils, and condensate area, but household cleaning should stay within accessible parts with the unit unplugged. Fins, wiring, and the refrigerant circuit are easy to damage and should not be treated as an improvised deep-clean project.
Unplug and remove the filter
Turn the unit off, unplug it, and wait for it to stop completely. Remove the filter as directed; vacuum it or wash it only if it is washable and let it dry fully.
Vacuum accessible coil dust without bending fins
Use a soft brush and light pressure on visible surfaces. Do not push tools between fins or spray water toward electrical controls; bent fins reduce airflow and heat transfer.
Clean accessible condensate areas
Remove surface debris from the condensate pan and make sure water can leave through the designed path. Do not drill new drain holes or change the unit angle if the manual specifies a particular installation position.
Extensive internal mold, electrical odor, or poor cooling needs service
If cleaning the filter and accessible surfaces does not restore airflow or the unit smells burnt, leaks onto electrical components, or barely cools, stop using it. Do not open the refrigerant circuit or high-voltage panels.
