A shower curtain liner collects soap, minerals, and biofilm because it stays wet. The method depends on whether the liner is plastic, vinyl, or washable fabric; the care label matters because heat that fabric tolerates can warp a plastic liner.
Remove rings and check the care label
Take the liner down and shake loose debris into the shower. Check the material, water temperature, and whether machine washing is allowed; a fabric liner may have very different care instructions from vinyl or plastic.
Wash with a small load and modest detergent
If the label allows machine washing, use a gentle cycle and cool or warm water appropriate for the material. A couple of compatible towels can add gentle agitation, but do not overload the machine or use excess detergent.
Never mix bleach with vinegar or other acids
If you use a product for staining or mold, choose one compatible with the liner and follow its label. Never combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, descalers, or other cleaners because dangerous gases can form.
Hang it to dry and reduce moisture between showers
Hang the liner fully spread so it can dry. Leaving it folded against itself encourages biofilm; ventilation, keeping it from clinging to the tub, and periodic cleaning slow the return of staining.
