On a microfiber sofa, the upholstery cleaning code matters more than how the fabric looks. Before adding moisture, find out whether the fabric allows water-based cleaner, solvent, either one, or vacuum-only professional care.
Find the W, S, WS, or X code
W generally allows water-based cleaner, S calls for a compatible solvent, WS allows either, and X usually means vacuuming and professional care. If there is no code, test any method in a hidden area.
Vacuum before spot cleaning
Remove dust, hair, and crumbs from the whole surface, including cushions and seams. This prevents loose soil from creating rings when moisture or solvent is applied to one area.
Blot from the outside inward without soaking
Put a small amount of cleaner on a cloth and blot the stain from the outside toward the center rather than scrubbing hard. Keep switching to clean cloth areas and let the fabric dry fully before judging the result.
Restore the nap gently if needed
Some microfiber fabrics feel stiff after drying. If the manufacturer allows it, a soft-bristle brush can lift the nap; if rings or color loss appear, stop home cleaning and seek upholstery care.
