A fabric chair is best cleaned by removing dry soil and treating stains locally rather than soaking the entire upholstery. The manufacturer label or upholstery cleaning code indicates whether water, solvent, or professional cleaning is appropriate.
Vacuum seams, folds, and under cushions
Use an upholstery attachment and work slowly along seams, folds, and cushion edges where crumbs and hair collect. Removing dry soil first prevents dust from turning into muddy marks when moisture is introduced.
Find the cleaning code before adding moisture
Codes such as W, S, WS, or X are used on many upholstered pieces to indicate water-based cleaning, solvent cleaning, either, or vacuum-only care. If there is no clear label, test any method in a hidden area before treating a larger section.
Work a stain from the outside toward the center
Apply a small amount of solution to a cloth rather than saturating the cushion. Blot and lift the stain instead of scrubbing hard, which can spread the mark or disturb the fabric pile.
Dry with airflow before using the chair again
Separate cushions where possible and increase airflow. If the padding stays damp for hours, odor can develop; if you cannot dry it fully, do not keep adding more cleaning solution.
