There is no universal normal run frequency for a sump pump. In a dry home it may sit idle for weeks, while during heavy rain it can cycle every few minutes. What matters is comparison with that home’s usual pattern and whether each cycle lowers the water, stops, and discharges it away from the foundation.
Run frequency changes with rain and groundwater
An increase during storms or snowmelt can be expected. Note how quickly the pit refills after a cycle and whether it returns to its usual pattern when weather improves. A permanent change without rain deserves investigation.
A cycle should lower the water level and end
The pump should start at a consistent level, move water, and stop before running dry. Repeated cycles lasting only seconds can point to a small pit, float setup, or water returning through the discharge line.
Near-continuous running is more than a frequency issue
If the pump cannot lower the level, compare inflow, discharge condition, and pump capacity. A unit that works without rest can overheat or fail during the very storm when it is needed most.
Test the system before wet season
If the manufacturer allows a clean-water test, add enough to the pit to activate the float and observe one complete cycle from a safe location. Also verify any backup power system; do not wait for flooding to discover a depleted battery.
