There is no one correct salt depth for every water softener. The brine tank needs enough salt for the next regeneration without running empty, but filling it to the top is not always necessary and can encourage salt bridging in some units. Follow the manufacturer’s level guidance and refill before salt drops below visible water when that applies to your design.
Use the manufacturer’s fill guidance
Some brine tanks have fill lines while others specify an approximate percentage. Household size, water hardness, and regeneration frequency change how quickly the unit uses salt between checks.
Do not let the brine tank run empty
Without enough salt, the resin cannot regenerate properly and hard water returns. Check the level on a regular schedule and add salt before the unit completes repeated cycles without regenerant.
Avoid overfilling when salt bridging is a problem
A hard crust can bridge over the water, making the tank look full even though the unit is not using salt. If bridging recurs, use the recommended salt type and keep a level that allows inspection.
Very high or zero salt use points to another issue
If the level drops much faster than usual or does not change for weeks despite normal water use, check programming, hardness settings, and salt bridging before simply adding more salt.
